Announcing Fusion for IBM FileNet P8

SWORD Group, the international specialist IT Products and Services Provider is delighted to announce the availability of Fusion for IBM FileNet P8, a specialist FileNet P8 application specifically designed to manage engineering documentation and processes in the context of a construction project or operating plant or facility.

SWORD’s Fusion has been the world’s leading engineering and technical content management application for the past 17 years. However, organizations are now looking to standardize on a single Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform such as IBM FileNet P8.

Historically, the traditional choice faced by organizations wishing to meet the content management requirements of their engineers has been between implementing a specialist application such as Fusion with its own data repository or to pay for extensive customization and extensions to a general purpose ECM platform. The latter approach brings with it high costs and risks associated with maintenance and upgrading to new versions of the ECM platform.

The solution to this challenge has now been solved by the launch of Fusion for IBM FileNet P8, a best in class specialist engineering application built directly on top of the leading IBM ECM platform. This means core FileNet capabilities are utilised by Fusion instead of being duplicated and, more importantly, everybody shares the same FileNet data repository. The result is a low risk, proven Best Of Breed value proposition with extremely low Total Cost of Ownership.

This new approach has been made possible by the robust and functional Application Programme Interface (API) provided by IBM FileNet. It has also required recognition by SWORD that the full range of ECM functionality is better provided by large ECM vendors such as IBM whilst SWORD focuses on providing its specialist engineering capabilities.

Such specialist capabilities provided by Fusion for IBM FileNet P8 are:

• CAD integration with AutoCAD and MicroStation
• Collaboration Space that for simple, secure review and approval processes of project documents using Microsoft SharePoint
• Transmittal Manager which provides electronic transmittal processing for incoming and outgoing project documents
• Reduction of project lifecycles and commercial risk through real time Project Handover Dossier.
• MS Office Integration
• Web based .NET user interface designed for engineering and technical users with powerful search and dynamic cross referencing capabilities

The first implementation of Fusion for IBM FileNet P8 has recently been completed at AMEC, Paragon, Houston, USA.

“Fusion adds valuable document-management capabilities to FileNet so much so, our engineers and technical users asked us for it” according to Marc-Henri Cerar Manager of Project IT and IS at AMEC Paragon. Cerar also wanted to move away from FileNet’s reliance on the J2EE Java environment. AMEC Paragon has chosen Microsoft .NET technology to provide enhancements for engineering and technical users.
